How Many Planning Firms Should You Vet Before Deciding?

Last week, I had lunch with a colleague on a layover in Zurich. We’re comparing notes as we often do. At one point, he stops and says something I didn’t expect:

“There aren’t many firms like you. I’ve looked.”

Honest observations like that are why we encourage clients to shop around.

Indeed, they will sometimes tell us they are looking at other options. Sometimes they seem surprised we commend them for doing so.

At first glance, you might consider that counterintuitive. But there’s a method to this madness…

#1: We get a lot of business from referrals, especially other professionals. It’s common for our partners to recommend multiple options. We respect that process.

#2: It’s important to us that you understand what’s out there. Every firm has pros and cons, and the smart ones don’t try to be all things to all people. Some clients are just a better fit for certain firms than others.

#3: We’re a boutique firm. We’ve tried all the models – small team, big team, with an office, no office working virtually. What works best for us is the boutique model – where us “old hands” work with a select group of clients in areas that interest us. And thankfully, we can afford to be picky about who those clients are.

#4: Experience speaks for itself. We’ve been at this for 40+ years. I myself have 18 years under my belt (and counting). That’s quite rare in this space.

But more importantly – and this is the heart of how we run our business – this approach serves your interests better. The more you understand what’s available out there, the easier it will be to make the decision that’s right for you.
