International Possibilities Planning

Introductory Planning

International PossibilitiesTM

International Possibilities is our foundational planning service designed to help people early in the process better understand their options, and the pros and cons of each.

Whether you already have a rough sketch of the plan or you’re completely brand new to the world of international investing, this service will give you a crystal clear idea of how to move forward — with a clear list of steps, budgets, and questions you might not have even thought to ask.

Who This Is For

An Introduction to International Planning and Investing

International Possibilities is built around solving the needs of Americans either considering a foreign investment or are brand new to the idea and trying to get a better handle on whether it makes sense in their case and, if so, how to go about getting started.

The Problem

Do You Understand What You’re Getting?

A lot of people make their first international efforts without a clear idea of what they’re getting into. They often make decisions based on partial information, only to later discover they’ve committed to something more expensive, more complex, or more demanding than they expected.

The Reality

Unexpected compliance requirements, higher fees than budgeted, poor tax treatment, structures that don't work as intended.

What We Do

Lay out the full scope of what you're looking at before you commit—so you can decide whether it's worth pursuing, and if so, which path makes sense for your situation.

Key Questions Answered

This is a structured process to determine what direction actually makes sense in your case – or whether it even makes sense to internationalize – before making any commitment.

Does this make sense?

There’s a lot of noise on the Internet about this topic – much of which is misleading, doesn’t apply to American clients, or is just plain wrong. You’ll receive an honest assessment of whether international options make sense for you.

What makes the most sense?

If the answer to the first question is yes, we’ll dive into what options are best matched to your goals and any situational constraints.

When does it make sense to start?

Depending on what you’re trying to accomplish, you’ll get a clear idea of when you should start any efforts – not too early but also not too late. (Doing business internationally is often slower than people expect.)

What We Work Through

Here’s a look at the kinds of things we cover during the process—not a checklist, but a sense of the ground we’ll cover.

Where You Stand

We take a look at your existing planning and setup to understand how any international effort will be complementary to your existing planning.

Goals and Constraints

We look at what you’re trying to accomplish and what may affect your budget, timeline, or preferences on how to go about it.

Realism Check

Different factors will affect what options you have. You’ll have a clear idea of what may and may not be worth a closer look.

Asset Access Options

We make you aware of the various international asset diversification categories, and the pros and cons of each, as applied to your situation.

Structure and Jurisdiction

With a clear idea of your options, we’ll outline the best structure and jurisdiction to match your needs.

Regulatory Framework

We’ll help you understand what regulations (US and foreign as needed) may apply to your plan.

Tax Framework

We’ll help you understand the tax implications (US and foreign) that may come with the implementation of your plan.

Setup and Ongoing Fees

We’ll give you a clear idea of the setup and governance/maintenance fees for any proposed solution.

Timelines

You’ll get a sense of what the timelines will be to implement your plan.

Next Steps Summary

We’ll give you a summary list of the specific steps in sequential order

Everything is customized to your situation.
We don’t use templates or pre-packaged solutions.

Strategy Session

We work through your situation in detail and work through some of the various options in real time getting your feedback, thoughts, and objections all the way through.

Next Steps Summary

We distill the discussion into a clear set of takeaways and next steps, and send this to you ahead of a follow-up session.

Follow-Up Session

We walk through the summary together, clarify any open questions, and confirm whether it makes sense to proceed further and the best way to do it. If it makes sense to move forward, we confirm next steps and how implementation would be structured.

Partner Fit

Implementation

What Happens Next

If you decide to move forward, implementation is handled as a separate engagement.

Depending on the direction chosen, this phase may include some of the following items.

Structures & Entities

In coordination with experts on the ground (accountants, lawyers, and other professionals), we establish any required structures, domestically in the US and/or overseas, as the case may be.

Banking

Working with our network of banking partners, we facilitate account openings and coordinate the relationships.

Asset Transfers

In collaboration with your existing custodians and institutions, we coordinate the movement of assets internationally.

Investment Management

We introduce you to asset managers who specialize in US client situations and coordinate the investment mandate once accounts are open.

Ongoing Compliance and Regulatory Matters

In coordination with your US and international tax advisors, we ensure the overall setup is workable from a US reporting and compliance standpoint.

Note: Not every engagement requires all of the above. The scope depends on your objectives and the structure (if any) that is put in place. The exact scope is defined clearly before any implementation begins.

Our findings and recommendations are summarized in a concise briefing of key points and implementation notes.

Yes. If you are currently considering an international investment or structure, and would like to better understand:

  • How it might fit into your existing plans

  • Whether it’s likely or not to meet your set goals

… we can make it a priority in any International Possibilities™ engagement.

No, as we are not licensed to offer personalized investment advice to American clients. However, we are able to make you aware of the different asset classes available, how they work for US clients, advantages and disadvantages of the options, general fees, and other relevant information.

If you engage us further to help implement a foreign investment strategy, you will engage licensed professionals as required with us serving as coordinators of the various pieces of the strategy.

Implementation is a separate engagement and depends on the direction chosen and the complexity involved.

It is not a one-step setup. In most cases, it involves multiple coordinated actions, often working alongside other advisors depending on the structure.

Scope and pricing are custom quoted after the planning phase, once the right approach has been established.

Anyone looking for a standalone plan or immediate execution without understanding the implications.
